Lots of towns in Minnesota's north woods claim to be the birthplace of Paul Bunyan, but trust me: Bemidji is the real deal.
A completely accurate, 100 percent authentic, life-sized statue of the 18-foot lumberjack towers over a park on Lake Bemidji's southwest shore. Paul's blue ox, Babe, stands loyally nearby. Both man and beast have patiently posed for tourist photos since the late 1930s.
Fun fact: A statue of Paul's girlfriend, Henrietta, lives in Hackensack, a few miles south. She looked a little weathered the last time I saw her, but I heard a local Eagle Scout gave her a facelift.
