Pathein, a delta city ,a bumpy 3+ hour drive south of Yangon showed an unspoiled view of a port city and more interesting and friendly people of Myanmar.
We stayed in a local hotel, rack rate of USD$35 and got a discount to $28 since with our driver and translator we needed 6 rooms.
Two of us spent a day touring on the back of a local driven motor scooter while two had to do business.
The port has a wonderful floating fresh produce market. Tea stands along the water were very European in an Asian style with the bustle of a souk.
The photo shows what is considered the premier parasol factory in the country. Still handmade. We stopped on a Friday mid morning. I pick two black/white traditional patterns. I was told if I came back Sunday morning they would have two matched pieces made specifically for me.
Arrived at 9 am on our ride back to Yangon and there they were, along with a gift of personal sun shielding ones for all four of us. I hand carried the two patio sized all the way back to NYC with stops along the way in Bangkok & Hong Kong.
Every time I see them by my pool I think about my wonderful adventure to Panthein.
