This is kind of a reverse travel story. I've been most fortunate to have been graciously hosted by many friends, strangers, acquaintances or other around the world but haven't had many chances to return the favor. So I jumped at the chance when Vojta spoke out at a Startup Grind Meetup at AOL West in Palo Alto. During the 'shout out' period after the main speaker event, he asked for anyone to help with their project which was to film a documentary on the Silicon Valley tech ecosystem. They had won a $10,000 first prize in a startup competition in the Czech Republic and had about two weeks to go to complete the filming for their project. A week after exchanging contact info, we set off on a Friday to a few locations in San Francisco and Palo Alto to interview key contacts I had made after years of working in 'the Valley' and being somewhat of a tech event junkie. We ended up visiting Rocketspace and pariSoma, two of the most well known coworking spaces in SF. We also interviewed FailCON founder Cass Phillips, StartupDigest founder Chris McCann, Teens in Tech founder Daniel Brusilovsky and startups Flipboard, LocalMind and VidCaster. All in all, a very pleasant experience and one that will certainly lead to future visits to Prague and joining my new friends Vojta, Pier and Teresa and doing what I can to help build a new frontier for tech startups in the Czech Republic.
