Spilimbergo is perhaps best known for its mosaic school, whose works of art are displayed in venues—such as cathedrals, royal palaces, and even airports—all over the world. Strolling through the town’s streets, however, you will be struck instead by the numerous painted palaces, some façades faded and peeling and others restored to their original brilliance. Most notable are the Palazzo Ercole (a.k.a. Casa Dipinta), whose 16th-century frescoes illustrate scenes from the mythical life of Hercules; the Palazzo di Sopra, currently home to Spilimbergo’s town hall; and the 15th-century Palazzo Dipinto, which may be viewed from the courtyard of the Castello di Spilimbergo.
