The handsome, well-maintained Floriano Peixoto Palace, right in the center of town, formerly served as the residence for the governor of the state of Alagoas. The late-19th-century building is now a museum, displaying antique furniture, period decorative objects and works by local contemporary artists. There’s another museum just across the square, this one named for Pierre Chalita, a local painter, teacher and collector. The museum, set in an old mansion, is known for its displays of sacred art, including paintings, sculptures, reliquaries and altarpieces.
