Palace of Phaistos

Phaistos, Crete
Knossos may get all the glory in Crete, but Phaistos definitely demands your respect. It's the second largest palace on the island (next to Knossos), and is located high on the Messara plain with a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains. It's been around since the neolithic area, built around 2000 BC, and once commanded many well-organized towns. Excavations have revealed plenty of historical artefacts, and today you're able to peruse the site at leisure.
