Tucked into the back of a row of shops, just off Bay Street in Beaufort, is one of my favorite shops - - anywhere. Oyster Cay is a collection of imported wooden furniture from Bali and across Indonesia. The owner makes periodic buying trips and personally selects the collection of "to die for" pieces. I have purchased benches, chairs and, my favorite, a 100+ year old daybed that sits on my wrap around porch.
Furniture isn't cheap and good furniture can be prohibitive. However, I often look at these prices and compare to Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware who both make reproductions of these originals. Oyster Cay beats them every time! Plus, you get a piece of history. To me, there is nothing like sitting on a chair worn by thousands of people over a hundred years. The patina is something that cannot be reproduced. I admit, I have my eye on a huge round dining room table which, by the time you read this, may already have a new home. If money were no object. Oyster Cay would furnish most of my home.
Tip: The store holds only a portion of their inventory. If you like a piece but it is not quite right, ask. I have searched the warehouse more than once and am amazed at the beauty of the pieces.
