In Los Angeles, where the roads are often lined in palms and clouds past noon are rare, it seems redundant to think that locals need a vacation. But everyone deserves the occasional break, and inside One Pico at Shutters on the Beach, Angelinos can join hotel guests in seeing their city as if it were a getaway. This upscale restaurant overlooks the Pacific Ocean and matches its hues with blue and white colors splashed throughout the room, from the boats overhead to the tables. Start the trip here at the bar, and then take a seat near the fireplace – whether you need the warmth or not – for your meal.
While the seasonal dinner menu is inspired by the Mediterranean, its fresh seafood and farmers’ market vegetables are equally at home in California. Dip slices of buttered bread into the roasted cauliflower soup, and then share a plate of pan-seared calamari. Choosing an entrée may be the most stressful part of this short vacation, since the delicious pasta, meat, and seafood options feature bucatini with Maine lobster and black truffle, slow-braised short ribs with roasted turnips, and mustard-marinated black cod with a saffron risotto. Take a sip of wine, which has been curated by Master Sommelier Peter Neptune, and relax: you can only make a good decision.
Lastly, indulge further with warm chocolate molten cake for dessert. And seeing as the Santa Monica Pier is nearby, the so-called vacation can always continue once you're satisfied.
