A trip down memory lane, in search of Izakaya houses
Omoide Yokocho (which means memory lane in Japanese) features old-school townhouses that specializes in yakitori (grilled chicken meat), served in izakaya houses. Think of izakaya houses as a “tapas” style cuisine, with many small plate dishes served up during the meal with hearty servings of sake to accompany the food.
Situated in the Shinjuku area next to the JR train lines, Omoide Yokocho is a great place to visit after a day of shopping or sightseeing near the Shinjuku area. The smell of grilled meat was very appetizing, and the homestyle izakaya dishes made the experience feel authentic. Make sure to check out the menus of the izakaya houses before entering the restaurant, and be prepared to use hand gestures instead of words to order dishes if you are not conversant in Japanese.
