Most people flock to Istanbul or Cappadocia for a true experience of Turkey. For me though, Antalya provides a much more authentic glimpse into Turkey's rich history. Many travelers use this town as a jump-off point to places like Cyprus, Greece, or better yet, the mystical Olympos.
Right outside of Kaleici (Old Town Antalya), accessible via bus or 'local taxi", sits the ancient town of Perge. Here, one can marvel in the historical ruins, preserved by the local government. There are a few free sites such as the 2000 years old stadium; for the rest of the ruins, an entrance fee is required.
After immersing yourself in Turkey's rich and diverse history, take a stroll in Old Town for authentic, delicious, and affordable bites. Once you have stuffed yourself happily, take a stroll around town and there are still plenty historical sites to digest.
