Legend has it that long ago a young man was chased through the streets of Stratford-Upon-Avon (Shakespeare's hometown) by armed guards and finally accosted in front of this tavern where he was shot in cold blood for a wrong he did not commit...or so our guide told us. His ghost, it seems, can still be heard going in and out of the old tavern's front door at night, weeping. It is just a legend. It is a fact, however, that this tavern retains the only thatch roof left in England. Many years ago these roofs were outlawed as fire hazards but somehow, this one remains. My husband and I bravely entered the spooked front door for some lunch and authentic British ale.
The Old Thatch Tavern has a cozy British atmosphere and features food by renowned chef, Josh Craven. It has also been recognized by the Good Beer Guide for its excellent beer. You wont be disappointed! The food was fantastic! Not being a beer drinker though, I cannot speak for the beer. My husband said "it's beer." But he's not really a beer drinker either. Anyway, I'm sure the ale-loving locals know what's good and they say this is good!
