When people visit me here in Sacramento, I take them wine tasting, but we don't need to go all the way to Napa Valley to experience Northern California's wine culture. About 10 minutes south of Sacramento in the Delta is a wine country few people know about. A short drive along the river, across a drawbridge, and down country roads brings you to this quiet agricultural area. The town of Clarksburg, surrounded by fields of grapes, has a few wineries and a one-stop-shop for wine lovers, the Old Sugar Mill. This mill was built in the 1930s but is now used as a collection of ten tasting rooms of local wineries. The interior with exposed brick and comfortable tables makes an interesting and historic atmosphere for wine tasting. Most wineries here have a $5 tasting fee and are open daily 11-5. Patio tables in the back are for you to use while tasting wine or having a picnic (bring your own picnic supplies).
