One of the biggest festivals in Ahmedabad, India is Uttarayan (aka Kite Festival). For two days, the whole city is hopping from roof top to roof top, blasting loud bollywood music, BBQing, and kite fighting.
By night fall, all of the kites turn into paper lanterns and fireworks. The best place to see the view is on the rooftops of the Old City. The homes here are webbed. The people are warm and eager, welcoming you with chai and sweets to their roof. For them, guest is God.
Word of caution: the kite strings are laced with sharp glass for kite fighting. Wear a scarf during the day and take autos (versus walking or motorbike) in case a string is being dragged and accidentally slices you (it happened to me!).
