Arrowtown is no longer the hidden gem it once was, but you can still step off the main street to find authentic, quirky and rare treasures all wrapped up in a gift shop with a difference.
Off The Wall Gallery & Store, run by locals Stuart and Jane Adams, is worth going those extra few steps for. What sets it apart is its walls adorned by the work of local artists - warm, vibrant works that capture beautiful autumn vistas or stunning mountain backdrops unlike any visitor ever can.
Far from the worlds of tacky souvenir stores and tour bus hordes, the owners take their time to explain to you who made what and where. How they remember all that, I've got no idea.
When you can take your eyes off the walls, there's even more to see on the tables and shelves in front of you. They source from New Zealand suppliers - my last purchase was made in Dunedin (a notepad in the shape of apple with a 'leafed' pencil as its stem) - and promote local products. If you're in Arrowtown, it's a "must do".
