The Black Angel statue in the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City is something of a local legend. When I told my Iowa City host that I wanted to practice my photography the next morning, she immediately pointed me to the Black Angel. It's a nine-foot-tall statue by Czech-American sculptor Mario Korbel that sits atop the grave of Teresa Feldevert and family. According to lore, anyone who kisses the statue will drop dead. I didn't test this assertion, however.
You can only see the tips of its wings in this photo, but the full statue is indeed creepy, even in the morning light, like a Doctor Who villain in the real world.
