They say New York is the 'City That Never Sleeps' so of course there must be a place in the city where one can get, drunk or sober, tattooed at any time of the day or night.
Enter: NYC Kulture.
This isn't the place you schedule months in advance for the renown talent of its tattoo artists, though they are good.
This is the place that you stumble into after a few too many rounds at McSorley's around the corner, determined to get the same tattoo as all the other friends you've stumbled in with. This is the place on Saint Marks where the tourists come, where the students hang out and where the yoga across the street is free on Tuesdays. The place where all judgement is reserved and the only thing that matters is if you actually are sober enough to sign a release and understand the permanency of what you're doing.
I've seen if before when I've been in there, sober myself, since I'd never recommend getting something so permanent as a tattoo while anything less! It's a place as fun for people-watching as it is for getting inked.
It's a sort of gem of the Lower East Side. In some ways, New York is a cartoon onto itself. But in the end, that's another thing that makes the city itself so great. It knows not to take itself too seriously sometimes. And so does NYC Kulture.
Oh, and reward yourself with a Guinness Shake a few doors down at Mark Bar when you've completed your tattoo. You've earned it!
