Witch Market
The Witches' Market, also known as El Mercado de las Brujas in Cerro Cumbre, La Paz, Bolivia. Local witch doctors are known as yatiri, and the stores sells potions, dried frogs, medicinal plants. The most shocking thing on vie at the witch market is the llama embryos. These aborted fetuses are buried under the foundation of houses as an offering the earth goddess, Pachamama. The witch doctor, yatiri, can be easily identified by their black hats and coco pouches containing amulets, talismans and powders that ensure luck, beauty and fertility. Aside from the pre-made box variety of charms and spells, the witch doctors can custom crate for you as well…assuming your Spanish is up to par of course. Sadly, common phrase books do not teach you how to say, “I would like a spell to vanquish my enemies!”
