Best Greasy Spoon Breakfast Spots in Newport Beach
I will probably be persona non grata around my hometown Newport Beach after this highlight. We have plenty of spots where you can get a $15 hibiscus mimosa or a $26 fennel salmon benedict, but good "greasy spoon" breakfasts are more rare. The exact locations I will not divulge, finding them will be part of the adventure. First, The Galley can be frustratingly hard to find, has been around for 50+ years and sits overlooking the bayside. Try the famous biscuits and gravy or the Ome Wich in an old school diner setting. Second up, in the shadow of Hoag Hospital, is The Chicken Coop. It has been around for decades as well, serving massive breakfasts for small prices. Enjoy the sawdust on the floor and the octogenarians at the bar drinking Negronis at 8am. Dive into the excellent Chicken Fried Steak or huge Ham Steak and Eggs with cheap Bloody Marys. Nearby, a block off PCH hides the Mariner's Café. Housed in a tiny space that seats around 15, it is a mystery to even many locals. Tuck into my favorite, and one of the best in town: Corned Beef Hash and Eggs. Try it over optional brown rice with some hot sauce and a dash of soy....it's a wrap. Last, this place is no secret but more known for beer soaked summer afternoons than breakfasts. Mutt Lynch's sits right on the beach, enjoy the ocean breezes through the open windows in a laid-back beach atmosphere. Try the White Trash Mimosa (PBR and OJ), The Biggest Loser Burrito and anything with their Mad Mike's spicy chicken sausage.
