The New Bern Firemen's Museum provides history buffs with a unique perspective on the New Bern Fire Department - one that echoes through the Civil War. Housed in a cozy museum just off of Hancock Street, the museum pays homage to the Southern (and Northern) lineage - rather, rivalry-fueled history - of the New Bern Fire Department. Horse-drawn fire carriages of both the Atlantic and Button companies are on display alongside the first motorized fire truck and other unique fire memorabilia such as the first "fire extinguisher" (imagine a leather bucket). Admission is $5.00. Buy a brick and the proceeds go towards restoration and relocating the museum to the Central Fire Station. A visit here brings the North-South rivalry in perspective though evidence of it still exists today.
