Cancun is located on the Yucatan Peninsula, historically home to a significant population of Maya people.
Today, approximately half a million Maya live on the Peninsula, and their culture is enjoying a resurgence of respect among non-Maya locals and international visitors alike.
There are different ways to learn about Maya culture during your visit; some hotels and resorts offer Maya cultural performances, for example.
Many visitors enjoy the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya, which was inaugurated in 2012 by Mexico's president, Enrique Peña Nieto. The museum houses more than 350 artifacts.
