D-Day Beaches
About an hour’s drive from Cherbourg are the beaches where thousands of Allied troops landed on D-Day, overrunning the German emplacements, and ultimately turning the tide of World War II. At Utah Beach and the village of Sainte Marie du Mont, you can visit the Museum of the Liberation with equipment used by U.S. forces, while at Omaha Beach you can explore German bunkers, see the coastal landscape still pockmarked by craters and pay respects at the American Cemetery, where 9,387 American heroes are buried.
