No T-Shirt shops here, the lobster pound serves only lobster
Well, that's not exactly true. They serve you a lobster with a corn on the cob, or if you have a kid who won't eat lobster, they'll slap a hot dog in a bun for you. They do have steamers or muscles steamed up in a muslin bag and served as is in a paper container. No "moules frites" here, my friend. Potato hips in a bag on the side. Soda in a machine. They do just a couple of things, everything is local, and what they do, they do very, very well, with no distractions. BYOB. The view is free (see photo).
Round Pond is an out of the way harbor in Maine. You can't get there very easily. There's barely a town there, though I must say that just after you get out of the tiny road that gets you to Muscongus Bay, there's a "this n that" store in an old house next to another of a different variety, but same general idea, and both are kind of fun. There's a candy counter in the big one with candy sticks in jars and the like.
I have friends in Portland who come up to Round Pond for the lobsters at Muscongus Bay Lobster Co. They really are that fresh, that well done. It's worth the detour. Not too far from Route 1, which you're probably driving on anyway.
