This was one of the most mesmerizing places in Mumbai. It was amazing to stand there and watch the dhobis (washer men) beating the clothes repeatedly on the flogging stones. I was astonished to learn the amount of clothing washed each day here and that the largest costumers are all the major hotels, hospitals, and popular clothing stores like FabIndia that get their clothes pre-washed before selling. As I walked around on my mini-tour, I realized that I was seeing history in the making. My guide, a dhobi who volunteered to show me around for a few rupees, proudly showed me the first of many new washing machines to arrive. There are also now spinning machines that make the drying process easier and quicker. I asked what would happen to all the dhobis if they were to be replaced by machines. My guide thought that would never happen.
