Even though our original trip to the Washington D.C. area was to cover Annapolis Maryland, we were more impressed with Mount Vernon, George Washington's home. The buildings and grounds have been beautifully restored, and there are even live farm animals for children to enjoy. And to look out the main house's back porch to the water was just amazing. It must've been so serene and calming for George Washington as our great nation was developing.
Insider's tip: Go early on a Sunday morning. This way, you avoid the droves of school kids on weekdays and the litany of families on weekends.
