Ready to channel your inner Gaudí? In Barcelona’s El Born district, you can, with a Trencadis workshop at Mosaiccos. Working with bits of broken glass using a technique used by Antoni Gaudí to cover his undulating forms, you can create a unique souvenir of Barcelona for yourself or as a gift.
Owner Angelika provides protective goggles, glass cutter, glue and ceramic fragments of every hue. She is a patient guide to the process, intent on making the activity an enjoyable one (she even helped me with the last bits). She kept our group's masterpieces overnight, and applied the finishing cement to fill in the spaces between the glass shards.
Two hours spent assembling pieces of glass and mirrors to make a picture frame gave me a new appreciation for some of my favorite Gaudí structures. Best of all, though, we had a fun time around the workshop table, and the results were more artistic than I'd anticipated.
For a creative activity in Barcelona, I highly recommend a mosaics workshop with Angelika. It's great for families, friends traveling together, or solo travelers. Mosaiccos also sells an assortment of accessories and decorative items, sparkling with Trencadis tiles.
