A Gem on Hopkins Street : Monterey Market
With such a plentiful, diverse bounty of produce available in Northern California, and such a healthy offering of outlets to buy from, its no wonder that you might not search off the beaten path for a green grocer. But, then you might miss this little diamond of a market tucked up into a quiet neighborhood on a particularly European block in North Berkeley. It's true that the prices for organic produce here can't be beat. AND that they have some of the most lovely flower offerings around, that their central location near a cheese monger, a fish market, and a butcher make your grocery shopping experience romantic in a way that seems lost long ago. But what you won't understand until you go yourself is just how FRESH everything is, how many different types of berries, greens, gourds, mushrooms, and everything in between they offer, and all of them are seasonal and local. Have a question? Their staff know vegetables and fruits of better than any shop keep I've ever met at a big chain grocery store. And, let's face it, there is just something satisfying about waddling out of a market with your arms full of fresh and beautiful things to eat!
