After staying at a luxury hotel like the Portola, moving to a youth hostel seemed like a major down grade. But I forgot how hostels are meant for poor travelers to support their needs. Free pancakes, 25-cent coffee and wifi... this place is perfect, right? Well it gets better: it is the first hostel I have stayed in that has successfully instigated green initiatives; the most creative being tokens limiting showers to 3 minutes at a time to conserve water. Does not hurt that the mattresses are real - and soft too. If you’re in Monterey, give them a try. You might be surprised.
