This idyllic village matched the picture in my mind as to how I always thought southern Spain would look. Declared a site of historic interest, Montefrio was an important border town between the Kingdoms of Granada and Castile. American author Washington Irving passed through on his way to the Alhambra in Granada in 1828, and a monument in the town's center marks its place on "The Route of Washington Irving." The town was not on my itinerary but when I saw this incredible view I had to stop. It happened to be the "Day of the Cross" festival when the town was filled with friendly locals. Lots of cute shops and restaurants to keep you busy for at least a day. It's an easy drive from Granada.
