The town of Montecristi, some 12 kilometers (seven miles) from Manta, was established in the 19th century, and it boasts a number of historic buildings as well as several cultural sights, including an excellent handicrafts museum (the Cancebí Galería de las Artesanías). But what makes Montecristi world-famous is that it is the home of the panama hat. (No, panama hats are not made in Panama; the term reflects the fact that at the beginning of the 20th century the hats were sent to Panama before being shipped to Europe and elsewhere.) There are no shortage of stores happy to explain the details of the production of the hats, and then sell you one too.
