For panoramic views of Minorca, head to the center of the island and its highest point, the peak of Monte Toro. After enjoying the view, visit the hilltop Sanctuary of the Virgin of El Toro, portions of which date back to 1670. A carved-wood statue of the Madonna stands inside the historic church. Look for the cave in a small vaulted chamber: As one legend has it, this was where a bull once led local friars to a statue of the Virgin Mary among the rocks. The Virgin was named the island’s patron saint, and this spot has been a pilgrimage site for centuries.
