High over Lugano looms the Monte Brè, a 3,061-foot-high domed peak offering some of the best views of the lake and surrounding mountains. A 15-minute funicular ride takes you to the top from Cassarate, a village in Lugano, where you can find a small restaurant, viewing decks and dozens of hiking routes that can take you all the way back down to the lake. Soak up the views of the Monte Rosa, Switzerland’s highest shared peak with Italy (15,203 feet), before wandering down to the village of Brè. For a stronger shot of adrenaline, you can now rent mountain bikes at the top station and cruise down through the beech forest or down lonely country roads back to Lugano for about 24 francs for a half day.
