Going After the Catch, Monday Market, Saldan Village, Koh Lanta, Krabi Province, Thailand.
I've heard that part of traveling well is putting strange things in your mouth.
Yeah, I said it. And yes, I subscribe to this theory. Rotten shark, rattlesnake, rat kebobs, mountain goat curry, raw sea urchin - if it's a local delicacy, I'm almost always game to try it (I can only think of one exception, but more on that another time).
Finding new and strange foods is a thrill, and one of the best places to do it is at a local market - whether you're in New York, Beijing, Bangkok or London, you'll always get a great feel for a place from the market.
The pop up Monday Market on the island of Koh Lanta is a great place to come face to face with unique sea creatures. You can have them cooked up in front of you if you're brave enough, or pack them in your luggage to save for later (note: never try this).
As a bonus, the vendors at this market are some of the nicest in the country. Might have something to do with the seaside setting and the outdoor ambiance. Just sayin'.
