Who says you need big waves—or even water—to spend an awesome day surfing? At Monahans Sandhills, a 200-mile-long dune field that extends from just outside Odessa across the Texas/New Mexico border, the 70-foot mounds of sand make perfect stand-ins for surging breakers. (The dunes grow, ebb, and change shape according to seasonal winds, so they’re really not so different from ocean swells.) Start by renting a sandboard or a sled at Monahans Sandhills National Park headquarters. Then follow the footprints of other visitors to the crest of nearby dunes—and start your ride.
