Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti and Mokoia Island
It's a little confusing: At Nelson Lakes National Park in the South Island, the two main lakes are called Rotoroa and Rotoiti; but the North Island has Lakes Rotorua and Rotoiti, important natural assets and taonga (valuable treasure) for the local Te Arawa people. Explore the lakes by boat, kayak or paddleboard. Mokoia Island, a lava formation in Lake Rotorua, can be visited for bird-watching (it’s home to several rare species), hiking and soaking in the Waikimihia hot pool.
