Suspended in Time
Of San Antonio’s five mission churches, the Mission Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción de Acuña resembles most closely its appearance at the time it was built (in 1755) and provides visitors a sense of the carefully considered scale and dimension conceived by its eighteenth-century builders. Constructed of limestone and adobe in the Spanish Colonial style, its interior follows European cathedral design, laid out in cruciform shape, with a cupola at its crossing. Renovations of the sanctuary brought back the original color scheme to its walls and there are remnants of fresco paintings.
