Hyuga's Mimitsu District

History lives in Hyuga’s Mimitsu district, where structures from the Edo and Meiji periods have been restored, including the white walls of the kura (Japanese storehouse) that fringe its cobblestoned streets. This charming former port town was designated by the Japanese government as an important preservation district. Highlights include the Hyuga City History and Folk Museum and the Tateiwa Shrine, frequented by Emperor Jimmu; it's also the spot from which he is said to have departed for his journey to the East.
