Mulkirigala Raja Maha Viharaya

This collection of seven cave temples set on a mountain amid a tangle of jungle and coconut palms has been a place of pilgrimage since the 3rd century B.C.E. Reached by a series of paths that access five different terraces, the present temples date mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. Each cave has representations of the Buddha in various poses along with intricate, well-preserved wall murals. Clamber to the top of the vertiginous final flight of steps, topped by a dagoba, for sweeping views.
