Just off the coast, Middle and Merri islands are the remains of an ancient sand dune--and they're home to a rare ecosystem with plants and animals unique to the area. Middle Island in particular is known for its colony of Little Penguins, the smallest species of penguin. Due to the dwindling population, conservationists have started using experimental Maremma sheepdogs to protect the colony and fend off predators. While the island is closed to the public, catch a glimpse from Stingray Bay Beach.
