The House That Kublai Built

Large arrow left

The Miaoying White Dagoba Temple was built in Yuan Dynasty as the personal temple of Kublai Khan, the grand son of Genghis Khan and founder of the Yuan Dynasty.

The Temple is a traditional Chinese temple, with one difference, it contains a Tibetan-style pagoda, or dagoba. The dagoba is dedicated to Tibetan god of war, often called the Buddhist god of war or the Great Black One. Kublai built a temple dedicated to this guardian spirit as a way of ensuring his conquest of the Song kingdom in Southern China.

The temple costs 20RMB to visit. The other great thing about the temple is its location in a less gentrified hutong neighborhood. To get to the temple, you take the line 2 subway to Fuchengmen station and go out exit B and walk two blocks. The temple is open from 8am to 4pm.
