Tristan und Isolde navigates its way to the Met opening night
On September 26, the New York Metropolitan Opera will premiere its season 2016/2017 opener of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. This new co-production contains eerie and moving visual projections by film director Mariusz Treliński and with Sir Simon Rattle conducting in one of his rare appearances at the Met. Stuart Skelton will reprise his role of love struck Tristan after having performed in this co-production in March when it debuted at the Festival Hall Baden-Baden Easter Festival.
This new production sets the treacherous love tale aboard a ship, the orchestra is the ocean, the characters are boats, thrown by the waves until they are smashed against the irresistible cliffs of desire.
