Strange Fruit
Living in a place for a while lets you experience the full range of what is available in the markets. In San Cristobal, just as the rainy season starts, all kinds of strange fruits from the hot low country become available. I saw some hairy fruits that were called Rambutans and are a relative of the Lychee, with a slightly different flavor but the same texture. Another fruit, light green on the outside, with patches of golden brown, and cracks (when ripe) that show the pink interior, is called Papausa. Soft and creamy, it resembles warm ice cream with a flavor reminiscent of strawberries and peaches. Each spoonful contains a reddish brown seed, so don't bite down hard!
