We all can walk around downtown Chicago craning our necks to gawk at the impressive buildings that soar above us... but come wintertime, wouldn't it be cooler to skate? If your answer is a resounding yes, then there's a pair of skates waiting for you at the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink. For 13 winters, Chicago has turned an outdoor area just beneath the Cloud Gate sculpture into an enormous rink that welcomes all who visit. From November through March (if weather cooperates), you can rent skates ($10) and glide, spin, and pirouette to your heart's content under the Chicago skyline.
Admission is free, and lessons are available an hour before the rink opens. And, of course, there are places to get warm and sip hot cocoa as you tighten your skates and recharge for your next outing.
