It's hard to know exactly how many Maya sites are in Belize, as many have not yet been excavated and still more remain to be discovered. But that still leaves plenty of excavated sites open to the public that are magnificent, awe-inspiring places. While some of the sites, such as Caracol, are remote and harder to reach, others, including Xunantunich and Altun Ha, are easily accessible and well-maintained by the country's National Institute of Culture and History. A knowledgeable guide will help you understand the symbolism and functions of the structures at each site, shedding light on the innovations and ingenuity of past civilizations.
