Marechal Deodoro

The colorful early-17th-century town of Marechal Deodoro is just down the coast from Maceió. Named for Brazil's first president, it holds landmark status—yet it hasn’t been gussied up for tourists. You'll see tiled-roof colonial houses and cobblestoned streets, but also some buildings in need of repair. The convent and handful of Baroque churches on the sleepy town square offer a glimpse into the past.
