At Wazemmes, You Can Have It All...Pretty Literally
There is nothing in Lille quite so wonderful and terrifying as the Sunday market at Wazemmes. If you're brave enough to push your way through thousands of people while cries of "BANANES, 2 EUROS!!" assault you from every side, Lille's largest market will reward you with anything you can think of: antiques, clothing, cheap shoes, purses and belts, flowers, and of course, lots and lots and lots of food! Whether you're looking to do some serious grocery shopping or just for a quick bite to eat, Wazemmes has the cheapest and best options - it's my favorite place to get my shopping done for the week. Where else can you get all the vegetables and eggs you need for under 10€? Outdoors, you can find stand upon stand of fresh vegetables and fruits and spices, and kiosks selling everything from whole roasted chickens to specialty burgers to shrimp egg rolls. Indoors, at Halles de Wazemmes, there are several more fruit and vegetable stands, along with several boulangeries, fromageries, butchers, and seafood stands. Truly an experience for all the senses!
As many restaurants and cafés in Lille are closed on Sundays, occasionally I like to pick up some picnic-worthy bites at Wazemmes (can't go wrong with a classic baguette/cheese/meat combination) and head to a nearby park to eat in the sunshine!
