In between running from temple to temple to waterfall to cave, pamper yourself with the best spa in Luang Prabang. The Angsana Spa is bliss. When the therapist had to (quite literally) peel me off the table, I knew it was the most amazing massage I’ve ever had.
The Angsana Spa is set in a tranquil garden in Maison Souvannaphoum, a historic hotel located across from the Nam Phou fountain (close to the town center, a 5-minute walk from the post office). They offer massages and other treatments like body polishes, manicures and facials. The private, peaceful spa pavilions are spotless, with shower, proper massage tables, linens and quality skin products and oils. It’s incredible value for luxury.
One of the most common questions I get asked by travellers in Luang Prabang is about where to get a massage. After a few experiences from some of the cheaper places in town – ranging from bad to “get me outta here!” – and hearing similar horror stories from others, I’ve learned that when it comes to massages and spas in Luang Prabang, you get what you pay for. Unlike Thailand, where Thai massage is a tradition and part of their culture, Lao “spas” are inexperienced and leave much to be desired.

Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel, Luang Prabang, Laos
Historic, elegant, luxurious, charming, an oasis, a retreat – few hotels in Luang Prabang can embody these descriptions in a location so close to town.
The former residence of Prince Souvannaphoum, four-time Prime Minister of Laos, Maison Souvannaphoum Hotel is a historic property only a 5-minute stroll to the town center – but the large and lush tropical gardens, elegant rooms, swimming pool and spa make it feel like you’re worlds away.
The 24-rooms in the original UNESCO-protected French colonial style mansion and the newer addition have lux comforts, like rain showers, private terraces and modern furnishings, yet true to its roots, the hotel maintains old-world charm highlighted with traditional Lao motifs like textiles, antique Buddhas and frangipani throughout.
The hotel’s greatest joy is its tranquility and warmth. Maison Souvannaphoum used to be a home and indeed, as you stroll down bougainvillea covered walkways, plop yourself down on your balcony or lounge poolside, served by waiters who address you by name and remember how much you loved the Lao coconut pancakes at breakfast (you must try them!), you feel right at home. The service makes you feel like royalty.
