While modern, ultra- luxurious cities exemplify Switzerland’s affluence, it’s high up in the Alpine mountains where traditions lie. To experience true Alpine life, travel up to La Tzoumaz, in Valais, and experience House of the Forest’s – Maison de la Forêt – senses trail. Walk the 2.7km of forest and meadow trail, smelling the Swiss pine bark, listening for the squawk of the nutcracker and tasting bilberries and blueberries. The House of the Forest, which also exhibits fascinating information about the wildlife in its museum, opens May 28 through September 28, from 9-5. Activities for children are held every Friday. La Tzoumaz itself sprawls with 150km of sign-posted trails and is hugely popular among summer hikers.
