Museum of Contemporary Art of Pernambuco (MAC)

With its colonial architecture so nicely intact, Olinda is not the kind of place you'd expect to find a contemporary art museum. Indeed, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Pernambuco (MAC) is housed in a fine 1765 colonial villa that had ecclesiastical functions; an old jail inside holds art as well. Opened in 1966, the collection of some 4,000 works of art includes the locally popular ceramic artist Francisco Brennand and Brazilian impressionist painter Eliseu Visconti.
