There may be only one experience in Kenya's Maasai Mara National Preserve that matches the wow factor of encountering a lion pride or elephant herd on a safari drive: hovering above them in a hot-air balloon. But thanks to the many balloon-tour outfitters that run daily excursions in the Mara, it's easy to get a snake-eagle-eye-view of the teeming wildlife here. Most trips follow a similar itinerary: a gathering before sunrise to watch the balloon inflate, then a couple hours' worth of slow drifting over the scrub and savannah, while early-morning sun elongates the shadows of giraffes, rhinos, and wildebeest hordes below. After touchdown, most operators serve a hearty "bush breakfast"—including Champagne—in the open grassland.
A jaunt that starts in the cold dark and ends under desert sun calls for layered clothing. JavaTech™ shirts and tees from ExOfficio keep you warm, dry, and comfortable.
