If you're in the Texas Hill Country, Luckenbach is a non negotiable stop on any road trip. Founded by German settlers in the 1840's this small town (population 3), aims to please and man, do those peeled potato fries ever hit the spot. There's a General Store, a Post Office, a Dance Hall and the Bar. What else does one need?
Luckenbach can be pretty sleepy during the day if it's not a weekend, and they don't serve food unless there's live music- so be sure to check out their calendar of events.
Jerry Jeff Walker put it on the musical map when when he recorded Viva Terlinqua and Luckenbach is the perfect place to dance both under some big, beautiful Hill Country stars and a barn roof.
If you're staying in the Fredericksburg area (recommended) and want a comfy hotel experience, a stay at the Hoffman house is Texas hospitality at it's best, and the drive to Luckenbach is only a 13 miles. If you're looking to camp in the area, a night at nearby Enchanted Rock is the way to go.
Get on over to Luckenbach and be sure to tell Hondo (pictured) 'howdy'.
